The Tejas and the Air Marshal Iss 1.                                                                Prof. Prodyut Das The recent statement by the VCAS Air Marshal AP Singh on the unsatisfactory state of development of homegrown equipment for the Vayu Sena is welcome. He has said no more than what was very succinctly put by Field Marshal Philip Chetwode a hundred years ago: “ The safety, honour and welfare of your country come first, always and every time”. The present dismal situation with respect to Weapons development – in this particular case due to moribundity of the Tejas and AMCA programmes -cannot change for the better without an admittance by all concerned th...
A rebuttal to Deccan Herald’s article on the proposed re-organization of DRDO-   Prof. Prodyut Das On 5 th May 2024 the Deccan Herald (DH) published a piece authored by two top level DRDO officials one an ex-Director of ADE and the other an ex Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister (SA to RM) and the then head of DRDO. The following are my personal observations on the views expressed by the Authors. The link to the piece is at :  https://www.deccanherald.com/opinion/before-redesigning-drdo-learn-fully-about-it-3003915?commentID=d3f47c02-1819-432d-8eea-61d93b8cc0cc .   I will put down some disclaimers to preempt the usual mud that is slung at anyone who criticize DRDO.   1.       I have never applied for a DRDO job. I do not carry a grudge at not being employed by DRDO. 2.       I am not a foreign agent. I express my personal assessment of a precarious situation. 3.     ...
Course 180- Building on Indian Defence equipment export success. ISS.1/May 10/2024 Prof. Prodyut Das   The increase in Indian Defence exports from Rs.686 crores in 2013-14 to Rs.21,083 crores in 2023-24 is good news. Adjusted to a common base we have i.e. a 1800 % increase over ten years. What makes the news better is: 1.       The increase was almost entirely due to policy and management changes. 2.       60% of the increase was contributed by the Private sector. The Government has declared an export target of Rs,100,000 crores by 2030. Whilst feasible there is also the chance that it may become a case of “If wishes were horses, beggars would ride”. The Government, by its nature, lacks the necessary time, focus, continuity and therefore expertise that is required to run Weapons exports - the most competitive and cut throat of all businesses. This sour caution comes because the way to Rs.1,00,000 crores of expor...
